Statehouse Day: Advocating for Change

Advocacy and hope for the future of Columbus youth are the central theme every day for Boys & Girls Clubs across the state, and that mission is brought to legislators once a year through Statehouse Day.

The Ohio Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, an organization representing all 62 Clubs located throughout Ohio, coordinated a day for Club leaders from across the state to speak with legislators at the Ohio Statehouse about the instrumental role that Clubs play.

The day began with a Legislative Breakfast in which elected officials and Club staff alike had the opportunity to hear two Ohio teens speak of the Clubs’ transformative impact on their lives, one of which was our own Columbus Youth of the Year, Elijah.  Elijah received a certificate recognizing “Remarkable Attainment” presented by Ohio State Senator Charleta Taveres (D-Columbus), Ohio State Representative Bernadine Kennedy Kent (D-Columbus), and Ohio State Representative Hearcel Craig (D-Columbus). Elijah shared with the audience that he has been accepted to seven colleges and is looking to hearing from more.
